DT’s Social Media Guide – A must read for all!

When it comes to experimenting with layouts for any new kind of creative for social media, a sharp voice raises towards the execution team that is from our very own creative manager who wants to understand the science and logic behind the experimentation before putting his team into action. So whether it may be a GIF creative or an Animation cover video or anything else, we the executers have to present a full proof document of what the dimensions are for different type of creative and also on different channels. Taking the creative liberty here, we are helping our creative team and the world in general; maybe this cheat sheet helps everyone in their journey of achieving excellence.

Whether it is a news update or brand promotion or even a meme, visual content rules the entire social media landscape. And with cut throat competition all around it’s hard to just cut and paste an image and reuse it across all of the platforms. The visual face of your brand is the first thing your audience sees and possibly the one they will always remember. We need to take into consideration that the creatives’ on any platform should be adaptive for both Desktop and Mobile.

Let’s start with our and every brand’s favourite platform –

Facebook

Let’s begin with – Business Page Sizes

Profile – 180 x 180 (170 x 170 on Desktop)

Facebook profile image for business pages now appear to the left side if the screen. It makes it stand out.

Guidelines –

  • Picture must at least be of 180 x 180 pixels. It will appear on page as 170 x 170 on desktop, 128 x 128 on smartphones and 36 x 36 on feature phones
  • Photo thumbnail will appear throughout Facebook at 32 x 32 Pixels
  • Business page images will be cropped to fit a square

Cover Page – 820 x 312 Pixels

Optimize your cover photo for the right dimensions: 851 pixels wide and 315 pixels tall for desktop, 640 pixels wide by 360 pixels tall for mobile. If your uploaded image is smaller than these dimensions, Facebook will stretch it to fit hence making it look blurry.

Guidelines –

  • Displays at 820 pixels wide by 312 pixels tall on computers and 640 pixels wide by 360 pixels tall on smartphones.
  • Must be at least 399 pixels wide and 150 pixels tall
  • Doesn’t display on feature phones
  • For best results, upload an RGB JPG file less than 100 KB.
  • Images with a logo or text may be best as a PNG file.
  • Business Page dimensions are exactly the same as personal accounts.

Facebook Cover Video – 820 x 426 Pixels

Post a Facebook cover video by saving a video file at 820 pixels wide by 320 pixels tall to your desktop. Facebook currently supports cover videos that are between 20 and 90 seconds long, and a minimum of 820 pixels wide by 320 pixels tall.

Guidelines

  • Even though the cover image is wider than a standard video, upload your video and then you can drag and drop it and/or crop it to the correct size.  Try to use video that has the most important content in the middle of the image so it does not get cut off.
  • Videos must be at least 20 seconds long but no longer than 90 seconds.
  • Facebook recommends you to use dimensions of 820 x 320 pixels.
  • Your video should be of 1080p.
  • You’ll need to choose a thumbnail image for your Facebook Cover Video. Choose something that shows what the video is about and teases/encourages people to click play on your video.
  • Facebook Cover videos will auto play on loop. It’s a great way to catch attention on the newsfeed.

Profile Picture – 180 x 180 (170 x 170 on Desktop)

The perennial brand identifier is as important as any other creative layout on facebook after all it’s your profile picture that will appear when you post on other walls, or when you comment or when you are searched.

Guidelines

  • Must be at least 180 x 180 Pixels
  • Photo will appear on page as 170 x 170 pixels on desktop, 128 x 128 on smartphones, and 36 x 36 on most feature phones.
  • Profile pictures are located 16 pixels from the left and 176 pixels from the top of your cover photo on desktop.
  • Profile pictures are located 24 pixels from the left, 24 pixels from the bottom and 196 pixels from the top of your cover photo on smartphones.
  • Photo thumbnail will appear throughout Facebook at 32 x 32 pixels.

Shared Image – 1200 x 623

A shared image is one of the most common forms of sharing on Facebook. These images will always appear on your timeline, and ideally they will show up in most of your followers’ News Feeds — though with a decrease in organic reach, it’s unlikely that everyone will see your post. The more people engage with your post, the more likely it is that the rest of your followers and their followers will see that activity.

Image Guidelines

  • Recommended upload size of 1,200 x 630 pixels
  • Will appear in feed at a max width of 470 pixels (will scale to a max of 1:1)
  • Will appear on page at a max width of 504 pixels (will scale to a max of 1:1)

Shared Link – 1200 x 627

Another great tool in your Facebook belt is the ability to share a link. It’s very similar to posting a shared image, but it gives you even more fields to work with. You can choose to create a shared link with a small square image to the left and text on the right, or with a larger rectangular image on top with text underneath.

Image Guidelines

  • Recommended upload size of 1,200 x 627 pixels.
  • Square Photo: Minimum 154 x 154px in feed.
  • Square Photo: Minimum 116 x 116 on page.
  • Rectangular Photo: Minimum 470 x 246 pixels in feed.
  • Rectangular Photo: Minimum 484 x 252 on page.
  • Facebook will scale photos under the minimum dimensions. For better results, increase image resolution at the same scale as the minimum size.

Highlighted Image: 1,200 x 717 (Recommended)

A milestone is a great time to create a highlighted image. This image is going to be housed on your personal timeline, but it is going to take up a more space than a shared link or image, so it’s a good place to celebrate the victories that keeps you going!

Image Guidelines

  • Will appear on your page at 843 x 504 pixels.
  • Choose a higher resolution image at that scale for better quality.

Event Image: 1920 x 1080 (Recommended)

Facebook Events help capture the attention of the users and cut through the noise on Facebook. Reminders are sent to your audiences thus, having a good space with an appealing image is important.

Image Guidelines

  • Facebook will scale down to minimum dimensions: 470 × 174.
  • Shows in feed: 470 × 174.

And if you’re interested in the tilt-to-pan option, I’ll share more details about it in the next section.

This component allows you to upload 2-10 images and show them in a carousal format. Each item in the carousal can be linked to a different page, and people can scroll left and right on their mobile device to interact with them.

Well that was too long right?
But that’s what makes it impactful!

Enough of double meaning jokes from me. Need to concentrate on work again, have spent enough time in researching and collecting the information. But as our Creative Manager, Enoch says, “If you gotta do it, you gotta do it right”. As marketers, we need to understand and keep one thing in our minds that whatever we create our audience is watching, viewing and understanding all this through their phones. Almost 70% of the brand consuming audience check all these updates on their smartphones. The designs, therefore needs to be adaptive to the mobile devices.
See you soon with some more gyaan.
